Street and park litter bins are one of the most frequently chosen categories of public space equipment: freestanding bins, post-mounted bins, bins with a rain hood, concrete and cast-iron bins, and combined litter bin and ashtray units for smoking areas. We also offer dog waste bins and replaceable bag liners that make day-to-day servicing easier.
Street litter bins are selected for both function (capacity, emptying method) and appearance, matched to the character of a park, housing estate or pedestrian route. This equipment belongs both to waste management and to urban street furniture. Formally, this category sits within the Waste and Recycling section, although you will find the products in both contexts.
Choosing the material for a street litter bin usually comes down to a trade-off between durability and cost. Galvanised, powder-coated steel copes well with changeable weather and deliberate damage; concrete works well where a high dead weight is needed to deter moving or theft; and cast iron is chosen mainly for its appearance in prestigious parts of town and city centres. Plastic and impregnated timber are used less often in public spaces because they are less resistant to vandalism, although they still have their place in parks with lower footfall.
The mounting method affects day-to-day servicing as much as the material itself. Freestanding bins are easy to move elsewhere if the original location proves unsuitable in practice, whereas post-mounted or ground-anchored models better resist attempts to tip them over or move them, which can matter in squares that are busy in the evenings.
When planning the placement of bins in a park, it is worth considering not only appearance but also the actual routes pedestrians take: a bin positioned away from the main footpath is more often ignored, which leads to littering of the surrounding area. It is also good practice to standardise models within a single space, so that a park or estate looks coherent rather than like a collection of randomly chosen items from different periods.
It is also worth considering waste separation at the street bin stage by installing several containers side by side, colour-coded for the individual waste streams. Although this requires more installation space, it genuinely increases the share of waste going into the correct stream, especially in places with heavy footfall such as open-air shopping areas and stations.
