Jerrycans

Jerrycans are handy containers for storing and transporting smaller quantities of hazardous liquids — a practical solution wherever large drums would be unwieldy and the contents need to be easy to carry and dispense.

They are standard equipment in workshops, warehouses and service points. It is also worth checking whether anything else from our range of hazardous waste containers might be useful — for example, a drum or an IBC for larger volumes of liquid.

Available in capacities from a few to several dozen litres, with a comfortable handle that makes carrying easier and allows precise dispensing of the contents. A secure cap reduces the risk of accidental spillage during transport on site. Versions with an angled spout or a flexible hose make it easier to pour liquids into smaller vessels, for example when topping up fuel or oil in workshop equipment. When choosing a jerrycan for hazardous substances, it is worth checking whether the packaging is certified in accordance with the regulations on the transport of dangerous goods and whether its material is resistant to the liquid being stored.

High-density polyethylene jerrycans predominate where a low tare weight and resistance to most chemicals found in workshops and on farms are what matter, whereas metal versions, although heavier, are chosen for storing fuels in conditions of elevated fire risk, where resistance to mechanical damage and high temperatures takes priority over ease of transport.

The colour of a jerrycan often corresponds to the type of substance stored — red is usually associated with flammable fuels, yellow with diesel, and blue with water or non-flammable liquids. Although informal, this colour system makes it easier in practice to identify contents quickly in the warehouse without having to read each label individually.

On farms and at service companies, jerrycans are also used to store plant protection products and liquid fertilisers — in such applications, an extra-tight cap and the material's resistance to prolonged contact with concentrated chemical preparations are essential, as these are considerably more aggressive than typical fuels or engine oils.

When transporting larger numbers of jerrycans, for example several at once in a company vehicle, it is worth checking local requirements for the carriage of dangerous goods and for securing the load against movement while driving — a poorly sealed or inadequately secured jerrycan poses a real hazard in the event of sudden braking.
