Fencing

Playground fencing supports both safety and order. A clearly marked, fenced play area reduces the risk of a child running out into the road or onto other hazardous ground, and makes it harder for animals to get in.

We offer fencing in a range of heights and systems, matched to the size and character of each playground.

We supply steel, aluminium and timber fencing systems to suit the character of the project, from residential playgrounds to large municipal recreation areas, with self-closing gates for added safety. A well-fenced playground is one that parents can feel at ease about.

Fence height is usually chosen to provide effective protection without giving the play space an overly enclosed, prison-like feel. A fence that is too low fails in its basic protective function, while one that is too high makes the playground lose its open, welcoming character and feel like an isolated cage.

The spacing of the bars or fence elements should prevent a child from squeezing through and also prevent a head or limb from getting trapped between structural parts. This is one of the parameters to pay particular attention to when choosing a fencing system, whatever the material.

Self-closing gates with a spring mechanism and a latch that small children cannot reach greatly reduce the risk of a child accidentally leaving the fenced area without a carer knowing. The lack of such gates is one of the more common causes of dangerous situations at inadequately secured playgrounds.

The fencing material should suit the character of the whole playground. Powder-coated steel systems in bright colours go well with modern, colourful play equipment, while timber fencing fits better in natural, park settings, where the aim is to blend in with the surrounding greenery and give the space a less industrial feel.

For large municipal recreation areas with several zones for different uses, such as a playground for young children, an area for older children and an outdoor gym, internal fencing that separates the age zones is worth considering. This keeps the youngest users safer from accidental contact with the more boisterous play of older children.

The depth of the foundations holding the fence posts should take account of local ground conditions and frost depth, so that the structure stays stable even after several seasons of freezing and thawing around the foundations. This is often overlooked on projects carried out in a hurry on a tight budget.
