Dog waste bags

Dog waste bags are an essential part of keeping walking areas clean: biodegradable and standard bags designed to fit dispensers installed in parks, green squares and dog runs.

They are ordered regularly by municipalities and housing estate managers who look after the cleanliness of green spaces, much like other waste management accessories.

The choice between standard and biodegradable bags should be checked against local environmental requirements, as some municipalities give preference to degradable solutions in tenders for green space equipment. Regular refilling of the dispenser is something worth including in the site maintenance schedule.

Standard bags, made from polyethylene, are usually cheaper per unit and mechanically stronger, which matters with larger dogs and heavy use. Biodegradable versions, made from materials that break down under industrial composting conditions, decompose much faster than conventional plastic, although they require a slightly higher budget at the purchasing stage.

Dispensers are usually mounted on a post along footpaths, right next to a litter bin, making it easy for dog owners both to take a bag and to dispose of a full one immediately. Separating these two points significantly reduces the effectiveness of the whole system, as some people simply ignore a distant bin.

The frequency of refilling dispensers should reflect the actual level of dog traffic at each location. In popular city parks, rolls of bags run out much faster than in residential green squares, so ongoing monitoring of consumption helps avoid a dispenser standing empty for long periods.

A growing number of local authorities explicitly specify biodegradable bags as the preferred standard in tenders for green space equipment, in line with the wider policy of reducing single-use plastics in public spaces.

Bag size should match the size of the dogs that most often use the area. Smaller bags are sufficient where toy breeds predominate, whereas areas visited by large dogs need higher-capacity bags made of thicker film to prevent tearing during everyday use by owners.

The appearance of the dispenser also matters in spaces with higher architectural standards. Models are available in several colours, as well as versions styled to match the other street furniture of a given estate or park, so that everything forms a coherent whole rather than a random collection of items from different suppliers.
