Outdoor recycling bins

Outdoor recycling bins are made from weather-resistant materials that withstand rain, frost and UV radiation, allowing year-round use in public spaces, parks and residential estates. Their stable construction also copes well with stronger winds and does not tip over in typical gusts.

Outdoor models are usually fixed permanently to the ground with anchors, which further reduces the risk of theft or displacement in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic, such as bus stops or parks. A complete overview of solutions, both for indoor and outdoor use, can be found in the Recycling bins category.

Recycling bins designed for outdoor spaces are most often divided into two or three compartments, marked with colours and pictograms corresponding to the waste streams collected. This makes it easier for residents and visitors to sort waste correctly at the point where it is generated, without having to look for separate containers scattered across the site.

The capacity of a single compartment in a park bin is usually several dozen litres, which, with moderate pedestrian traffic, is sufficient for one to two days without overflowing. In very busy locations, such as promenades, railway stations or open-air shopping centres, it is worth considering higher-capacity models or a more frequent emptying schedule.

The housing material affects not only durability but also the visual perception of the public space: powder-coated galvanised steel blends well with modern urban architecture, whereas timber or wood-based composite suits parks and green areas with a more natural character.

Disposal openings in outdoor bins are designed to limit rain ingress, using canopies, hinged flaps or side apertures. This prevents rainwater from collecting together with the waste and reduces unpleasant odours and bacterial growth, which is particularly important in summer.

When planning the placement of recycling bins in public spaces, good practice is to position them right next to benches and bus stops, places where people naturally linger and generate waste such as drinks packaging or snack wrappers.

Bins installed directly next to the entrances of public buildings are often additionally fitted with an ashtray integrated into the housing. This reduces the number of cigarette ends ending up directly in the waste compartment, which genuinely lowers the risk of a fire starting inside the bin.
