circular tree grilles

Circular tree grilles naturally follow the shape of the trunk and protect the root system evenly all the way round. They are a popular choice for urban parks and avenues where trees are planted in a less regular, more natural pattern.
They help rainwater reach the soil around the trunk without the risk of compacting the ground right next to the tree. For larger, mature trees, sets of several grille segments are joined to form a ring, which can be extended as the trunk grows. Galvanised steel or cast iron provides the required load capacity and keeps the pedestrian surface looking neat. The circular version, usually offered alongside the square one, is part of the full range in the tree grilles and guards category.
A circular grille reflects the natural, radial spread of the root system far more closely than a square one, so it suits less formal parkland better. In the avenues of historic urban parks, where trees grow in a less orderly pattern, a circular grille blends into the landscape instead of imposing a geometric shape on it.
When fitting a grille around a younger tree, choose a starting diameter with enough allowance for the expected trunk growth in the coming years. The modular design means extra ring segments can be added later without removing the whole grille, but enough space around the central opening has to be planned in advance.
Beyond its appearance, the grille has a purely practical role. It stops foot traffic from compacting the soil around the trunk and protects the bark from accidental damage during maintenance work. Mowing close to the tree is one example: careless use of a mower is one of the more common causes of mechanical damage to tree trunks in urban areas.
Galvanised steel is the versatile option and the most popular choice. Cast iron is more expensive but is often preferred in formal, historic locations, where the grille needs to reflect the traditional style of park furniture from decades ago.
Among established trees that have grown for years with no ground protection, a circular grille is often easier to fit than a square one. The irregular, natural outline of an older trunk sits better within a circular central opening, so parts do not need to be cut or modified on site.
