The smallest capacities, 60 and 80 litres, are designed for single households that produce little waste. They also suit fractions collected in smaller quantities, such as glass or metal. Like the other capacities in the Waste containers category, they are available in both plastic and metal versions. Their light construction means they can be carried easily without transport wheels, which makes them a frequent choice for detached houses and leisure plots.
Because 60 and 80-litre containers are light and have no sharp edges, they are safe to handle even for elderly people. They can be carried or moved without risk of injury, which matters when a household does its own waste separation.
The plastic version, made from HDPE polyethylene, is lighter and cheaper to buy. It copes well with moisture and does not corrode, so it is the natural choice where the container stands outdoors all year round. The metal alternative, usually galvanised steel, suits locations exposed to heavier mechanical loads, or households that value a longer service life over a slightly lower purchase price.
The 60 and 80-litre capacities work particularly well on allotments, at holiday homes and wherever waste is collected less than once a week and storage space is limited. Because they are small, several can stand side by side (for example, separate ones for glass and metal) without the need for a dedicated bin shelter.
When choosing between 60 and 80 litres, consider the actual number of household members and the collection schedule agreed with the local authority. The difference in volume may be small, but with less frequent collection it decides whether the container fills up before the next collection date. For seasonal households used only in summer, the smaller capacity is usually entirely sufficient.
In terms of running costs, containers of this size perform well. A low purchase price and minimal maintenance make them an economical complement to larger 120 or 240-litre containers, especially for fractions produced only occasionally.
When carrying a 60 or 80-litre container by car, for example on the way to a leisure plot, check that the base is stable and the lid seals properly. Smaller models less often have a factory-fitted lid lock, so on a longer journey over uneven roads the contents can spill if the container is not secured with a strap.
