Pedal bins

Pedal bins allow the lid to be opened hygienically without touching it by hand – an important solution in kitchens, washrooms, medical consulting rooms and anywhere that limiting contact with contaminated surfaces is a priority.

Recommended for healthcare facilities and food service outlets.

In healthcare and catering facilities, pedal bins are often required by internal hygiene procedures as standard equipment at workstations involving direct contact with food or patients. The pedal mechanism should be selected with durability in mind, as under intensive use it is the component most exposed to wear. A pedal mechanism is one of the options available across the entire litter bins category.

Despite its apparent simplicity, the pedal mechanism is the part of this type of bin subject to the greatest wear – repeated daily pressing of the lever puts strain on the spring and the lid mounting points. In models with enhanced durability, manufacturers use reinforced metal hinges and stainless steel springs, which extend the service life of the mechanism even under intensive use in public spaces.

The housing of a pedal bin is most commonly made of stainless steel or powder-coated steel. The former is better suited to healthcare and catering facilities thanks to its ease of disinfection and resistance to strong cleaning agents, while the latter can be a more economical alternative where hygiene requirements are less stringent.

In doctors' surgeries, laboratories and other healthcare facilities, a pedal bin is often a mandatory item under internal hygiene procedures, as it reduces the risk of contamination being transferred through hand contact with the lid surface. Similar requirements often apply in commercial kitchens, where staff handling food should minimise touching surfaces not directly related to meal preparation.

An alternative to the pedal mechanism is the sensor bin, which opens the lid automatically when a hand approaches. However, the pedal solution remains much simpler to maintain – it requires no power supply or periodic battery replacement, and a fault is usually limited to replacing a single spring or hinge, which can be done on site without specialist servicing.

When purchasing, it is worth considering the lid opening angle and a soft-close mechanism that reduces noise during frequent use – an important detail in quiet office spaces or waiting rooms, where a lid slamming shut with every use can be noticeably disturbing to people nearby.
