Sandpits

Sandpits are classic equipment for any playground, supporting creative and sensory play for the youngest children. They are available in square, round and unusual shapes, with benches around the edge that make it easier for carers to supervise play, which makes them one of the most popular products in our playgrounds section.

Construction from impregnated timber ensures durability and a natural appearance that blends well with green surroundings.

Managers of nursery and residential playgrounds should remember to replace or top up the sand periodically and to use protective covers to keep animals out overnight; this is essential for keeping a sandpit clean and fully usable.

The shape of the sandpit should be matched to the available space and to the way children will use it: a round model encourages free, informal group play without clearly defined zones, while a square or rectangular model makes better use of space when installed close to a fence or other playground elements, where making the best use of every square metre matters.

Pressure-impregnated timber remains the most popular material thanks to its natural appearance and good performance in contact with damp sand, but the condition of the impregnation needs to be checked periodically, especially at the joints, where moisture lingers longest. Plastic sandpits are an alternative: lighter and virtually maintenance-free, although less often chosen for aesthetic reasons in locations with higher visual requirements.

Benches around the edge of the sandpit serve a dual purpose: they make it easier for carers to supervise play at close range and form a natural boundary that limits sand spilling outside the designated area. Their height should be chosen so that adults can sit comfortably while children can still climb in easily.

The depth of the sand layer has a direct impact on the comfort and safety of play: a layer that is too shallow quickly exposes the hard base of the structure, which limits play and increases the risk of minor injuries from falls. Regularly topping up the sand, sieving out debris and using a protective cover overnight are essential to keeping the sandpit in good condition throughout the season.

Play sand should come from a certified source intended specifically for contact with children. It differs from building sand in its cleanliness and grain size, which improves play comfort and reduces the risk of dust and skin irritation for the youngest users.
