Bio-waste bins

You will find them in the Recycling bins section, alongside other solutions for separate collection. Bio-waste bins designed for waste separation feature a system that limits bacterial growth and unpleasant odours. They are an important part of the waste separation system, in which bio-waste is mandatory in Poland as the fifth fraction of municipal waste. They are particularly well suited to multi-occupancy residential buildings and catering establishments that generate large amounts of organic waste.
In the summer months, when temperatures are higher, bio-waste bins need emptying more often than in winter. This is worth taking into account when planning cleaning schedules in catering establishments serving a high volume of meals.
Bio-waste, the fifth fraction of municipal waste, consists mainly of kitchen scraps, peelings and coffee grounds and, in its garden form, also grass cuttings and leaves. Unlike paper or plastics, this waste stream decomposes quickly, so containers for collecting it are designed differently from standard recycling bins, with a focus on limiting moisture, odours and access by insects.
Ventilation systems in bio-waste bins usually rely on small openings or carbon filters in the lid, which let excess moisture escape without releasing unpleasant smells. This greatly reduces the problem that most often discourages residents of multi-occupancy buildings from separating organic waste properly, namely the unpleasant smell near utility rooms.
The material is particularly important here, as contact with wet organic waste speeds up corrosion of inadequately protected metal parts. For this reason, bio-waste bins are most often made of moisture-resistant plastic or galvanised steel with an additional paint coating that can easily be pressure-washed during periodic cleaning.
In housing cooperatives and residents' associations, these bins are usually placed in designated bin shelters together with the other fractions, whereas in restaurants and canteens they more often go straight into the kitchen back-of-house area, where organic waste is produced continuously during food preparation. Such placement shortens the distance between where the waste is produced and the container, which genuinely improves separation by kitchen staff.
Regular washing and disinfection of the container is just as important as the choice of model. Even the best-designed ventilation system cannot replace periodic cleaning of the bin interior, especially in summer, when organic waste decomposes faster. Some of our customers choose to buy an extra set of liners or biodegradable bags, which makes it easier to maintain hygiene without having to wash the whole unit every time.
