Wooden litter bins

As a decorative feature in green spaces, wooden litter bins sit naturally in landscape parks, walking paths and recreational areas. The natural texture of wood softens the hard look of standard urban furniture and goes well with wooden benches or pergolas at the same site.

They are a popular choice for schemes that deliberately aim for an intimate, welcoming and natural look in public space. The frame, usually made of galvanised steel, ensures a durable structure, while the wooden slats need regular treatment to keep their appearance for longer. If wood does not suit a particular location, the street and park litter bins category also offers steel and cast-iron versions.

The wood used in park bins is usually pine or larch, pressure-treated for better resistance to moisture, fungi and insects. Even so, unlike steel or concrete, a natural material needs regular maintenance to keep its appearance and durability over many years of use.

How often the preservative needs to be reapplied depends on the site. Bins in full sun and directly exposed to rain and snow need maintenance more often than those sheltered by trees, so it is worth including this in the grounds manager's maintenance schedule.

The bin's supporting frame, usually made of galvanised steel, carries the main structural loads, while the wooden slats are mainly decorative and protective. This combination of materials gives the durability of metal together with the warm, natural look of wood.

Wooden bins look best among mature trees, along park paths and nature trails, and in recreational areas where the client deliberately avoids a hard, industrial look in favour of an intimate, welcoming atmosphere for a space often visited by families with children and dog walkers.

Where different materials are combined in one space, a wooden bin pairs well with wooden benches, pergolas or information boards. Together they form a visually consistent set in which no item looks out of place next to the others.

When choosing the shade of preservative, it is worth considering practical factors as well as looks. Lighter finishes reflect more sunlight and heat up more slowly, which matters for bins in full sun, where overheating makes the wood dry out and crack sooner.
