This capacity range is most often cited as the standard when fitting out new offices and coworking spaces, as it strikes a balance between emptying frequency and the amount of floor space occupied. It also works well in waiting areas and reception areas with moderate footfall.

A capacity of 30–60 litres is something of a happy medium between small desk bins and the large containers used in back-of-house areas or collection points. It is large enough not to need emptying several times a day, yet compact enough not to take up too much floor space in a moderately sized room.

This capacity range includes both powder-coated steel and plastic models, available with a swing lid, a flap lid or fully open. The lid design should be matched to the nature of the room: in conference rooms and waiting areas a discreet lid that hides the contents works better, whereas in staff kitchens open models are often more practical, making it quicker to dispose of waste while preparing meals.

Bins with a capacity of 30–60 litres are usually fitted with bag holders on the top rim, which stop the bag from slipping as it fills and make it quick to replace without having to fit the bag to the inside of the container each time. Choosing the right bag size for the bin's capacity avoids both wasting material with bags that are too large and tearing with bags that are too small.
