Square tree grilles are shaped to match the regular layout of pedestrian paving. They are most often used when upgrading pavements and town squares, where the grille needs to fit the geometry of the surrounding block paving or paving slabs. A square grille sits well within regular block paving. The full range of options is available in the tree grilles and guards category, alongside the circular version and standalone trunk guards.

They let rainwater and air reach the root system freely while preventing pedestrians from compacting the soil. Made of steel or cast iron, they are specified by load capacity, either for pedestrian-only areas or for areas also used occasionally by service vehicles.

A square tree grille usually consists of several segments joined around the trunk. This makes it easy to fit around established trees without transplanting them or removing them temporarily. The modular design also allows the central opening to be enlarged later as the trunk grows, without replacing the whole grille.

Steel components are protected by hot-dip galvanising. Where appearance matters more, they are also powder coated in a colour that matches the other street or square furniture. Cast iron is heavier but withstands point loads better, which can matter when grilles are installed close to service vehicle lanes.

The grille's flat, durable surface removes the uneven ground that a traditional lawn or bare soil around the trunk would create. Without it, the area could be an obstacle for people with pushchairs, cyclists and wheelchair users, which is an important consideration when designing spaces that are accessible to all.

Square tree grilles are most common in regeneration projects for market squares, shopping streets and formal avenues. In these settings, the regular pattern of block paving or paving slabs calls for an equally regular, geometric tree surround that fits the overall design of the space.

Simple trunk guards are used mainly for young, newly planted trees. A ground-level grille, by contrast, protects the soil around the trunk rather than the trunk itself. The two are often used together: the guard protects the bark from abrasion, and the grille stops the roots from being trampled. Together they give young trees fuller protection during their first years of growth.
