Mesh containers

Mesh containers are a light, well-ventilated design used mainly for collecting PET and other plastic waste. The open structure makes it easy to see how full the container is and stops moisture building up inside. They are often used at recycling collection points and alongside other recycling containers in public spaces.
Because of their open mesh design, they cost less to buy than closed containers of a similar capacity. They also let waste contractor staff see quickly how full they are without opening a lid. More container types, from plastic to metal, are available in the Waste containers section.
A mesh container is made from a steel frame covered with closely woven mesh. The mesh is usually galvanised wire, sometimes also powder-coated for extra corrosion resistance. As a result, the container stays stable despite its open structure, even when well filled with light packaging waste such as PET bottles or plastic film.
In towns and cities, mesh containers are usually placed at recycling points on housing estates and near shopping centres, and are used to add capacity at municipal recycling centres. The open design also airs the contents quickly. This matters with food packaging, where food residue can cause unpleasant smells if it is left in a closed container for a long time.
Because they are light, these containers are easy to transport and move, for example when a collection point is rearranged for the season or extra containers are needed during the busy tourist season. Although the design is simple, a good-quality mesh container will last many years outdoors. When comparing manufacturers, check the wire gauge and the quality of the anti-corrosion coating.
Organisations looking for something cheaper than closed containers that still works well for light waste streams often choose mesh containers. They are one of the most popular additions to standard containers for general waste and glass.
An empty mesh container weighs very little, so it is best placed out of strong winds or fixed to the ground. When fully emptied, especially in dry, windy weather, the light structure can blow over, which does not happen with heavier closed containers. This small point should be considered when choosing where to put the collection point.
